He saw Police General Pracha, who is leading the flood relief effort and handed over a cheque to help people who have had to vacate their homes. The funds were realised from savings made for the Queen’s official birthday event hosted by the British Embassy on 19 October, with sponsorship from business.
The Ambassador was given an update on how the flood waters had affected central Thailand and its likely progress through Bangkok to the Gulf of Thailand.
He also visited the refuge centre set up in the old international terminal where some 4000 people were camped in tents. Food, medicine and other provisions came from both the Thai government and voluntary organisations.
At the time of the visit, the road outside Don Muang had already flooded and water had breached the airport perimeter. People were warned that they would have to move again.
The Ambassador expressed his concern for the welfare of people affected by the flood and said that it was important that timely and credible information was given to the public so that they could take steps to be safe
